How To Deal With A Car Accident

You decide to take a ride in your car on a pleasant summer afternoon. As you are driving, a car appears from nowhere and surprises you. You lose control and collide against the back of the other car. What would your reaction be ? You will most likely be thinking about the condition of the driver in the other car and the monetary and lawful consequences of the car accident.

After realizing that the accident didn\’t cause any serious injury, you walk up to the driver of the other car to make sure he is alright. You express regret and extend your help to him. As you are convinced that the accident didn\’t result in any grave injury to him, you will need to find out his name, phone number, address, his insurance company and insurance policy number. If he doesn\’t have a policy, then get the make, model and color of his vehicle.

If you can find any witnesses to the event, then try getting their names, addresses and phone numbers. This information may prove extremely important at the time of deciding the liability insurance based on who was at fault in the car accident. However, if the accident is of serious nature and if police is summoned to the scene of the accident, then you might not be in a position to acquire the necessary information. In such an event, you should take note of the police report number. You will need to provide this report number to your auto insurance company.

Contact your insurance company at the earliest and inform them about the accident. Provide them the report number so that they can get the contact information of the other person and the details of the accident information from the police report. Informing them in advance will help your case, if you were the one responsible for the accident.

It\’s important that you go through this process irrespective of whether you consider yourself responsible for the accident or not. This is because most insurance providers need you to report accidents to them. Moreover, if you fail to inform them about the accident, then you may have problems getting a new insurance policy later. Thus, make sure you contact your insurer and inform him about the accident.
